Soulm8te

Platform: VOD / Digital Rating: R Runtime: 1h 39m Distributor: Blumhouse / James Wan

Soulm8te opens the month with a digital release on August 1. Produced by horror heavyweights James Wan and Jason Blum, the film follows a grieving man who acquires an artificially intelligent android to cope with the death of his wife. His attempt to create a truly sentient companion backfires when the lovebot evolves into something dangerously possessive. The cast includes David Rysdahl, Oliver Cooper, Lily Sullivan, and Claudia Doumit. Directed by Kate Dolan, Soulm8te blends sci-fi, horror, and psychological thriller elements into its R-rated package.

One Night Only

Platform: Wide Theatrical Release Rating: R Runtime: 1h 42m Distributor: Universal Pictures

One Night Only is the most high-profile R-rated theatrical opener of August 7. Directed by Will Gluck, the filmmaker behind Anyone But You and Easy A, the romantic comedy is set in a lightly fictionalized New York City on the one night of the year when pre-marital sex is legal.

Academy Award nominee Monica Barbaro and BAFTA nominee Callum Turner star as Allie and Owen, two strangers who cross paths and feel an immediate connection, only for a series of chaotic missteps to keep pulling them apart as they race across the city toward each other. The supporting cast includes Maya Hawke, Julia Fox, King Princess, Ziwe, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The R rating reflects the film’s frank sexual premise and adult comedic content.

Super Troopers 3

Platform: Wide Theatrical Release Rating: R — Sexual Content, Nudity, Language Throughout, Drug Content Runtime: 1h 44m Distributor: Searchlight Pictures

The Broken Lizard comedy troupe returns for a third outing with Super Troopers 3, also opening wide on August 7. When Farva’s over-the-top Indian engagement to Thorny’s sister spirals out of control, the Vermont State Police troopers must navigate Thorny’s schemes to derail the relationship while simultaneously cracking down on a dangerous new drug ring.

Directed by Jay Chandrasekhar, the film reunites the full original cast — Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske — alongside Brian Cox, Marisa Coughlan, Nat Faxon, Chace Crawford, and Hannah Simone. The MPAA rating specifically calls out sexual content, nudity, language throughout, and drug content, making this one of the harder R-rated comedies of the summer.

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma

Platform: Limited Theatrical (Mubi) Rating: R Distributor: Mubi

Opening in limited release on August 7, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is one of the most distinctive genre films of the summer. Directed by Jane Schoenbrun, the horror-comedy follows a young filmmaker (Hannah Einbinder) who is determined to revive a struggling slasher franchise. When she visits the original film’s reclusive star, played by Gillian Anderson, the two women find themselves drawn into a blood-soaked world of desire, fear, and delirium. The film also stars Jasmin Savoy Brown, Eva Victor, and Sarah Sherman. It carries an R rating and is expected to generate significant conversation given Schoenbrun’s prior critically acclaimed work.

Tony

Platform: Limited Theatrical — New York and Los Angeles (Wide release August 21) Rating: R Runtime: 1h 46m Distributor: A24

A24’s Anthony Bourdain biopic opens in limited release in New York and Los Angeles on August 7 before going wide on August 21. Set in the summer of 1975 in Provincetown, Massachusetts, Tony follows a 19-year-old Bourdain (Dominic Sessa) as he stumbles into the chaotic world of a restaurant kitchen, setting off a formative summer that will shape the rest of his life.

The film is directed by Matt Johnson, the Canadian filmmaker behind BlackBerry, from a script co-written with Matthew Miller, Todd Bartels, and Lou Howe. The cast includes Emilia Jones, Leo Woodall, Stavros Halkias, Dagmara Dominczyk, Rich Sommer, and Antonio Banderas as the Brazilian-born restaurateur who takes young Tony under his wing. Production took place on Cape Cod and featured iconic Provincetown locations including Spiritus Pizza and the Lobster Pot.

The Wrong Girls

Platform: Wide Theatrical Release Rating: R — Drug Use, Language, Sexual References, Graphic Nudity Runtime: 1h 39m Distributor: NEON

The Wrong Girls is the marquee R-rated wide release of August 14. Written and directed by Dylan Meyer in her feature directorial debut — she co-wrote the script with star Kristen Stewart, who is also her wife and a producer — the film follows two broke best friends, Frankie (Stewart) and Molly (Alia Shawkat), who accidentally gain telepathic abilities after ingesting an experimental drug.

The incident turns their lives upside down and puts them on the run from dangerous rivals pursuing the same substance. The supporting cast is stacked: Seth Rogen, LaKeith Stanfield, Kumail Nanjiani, Tony Hale, Kate McKinnon, Geena Davis, Zack Fox, and Cate Blanchett. Seth Rogen voices a talking cat. The MPAA rating cites drug use, language, sexual references, and graphic nudity. NEON is giving the film a full nationwide theatrical release, which is increasingly rare for adult-oriented comedies in the streaming era.

Wet Hot American Summer (Re-release)

Platform: Limited Theatrical (25th Anniversary) Rating: R

The 2001 cult comedy classic from David Wain and Michael Showalter returns to theaters for its 25th anniversary on August 14. Originally a box office disappointment that became a beloved comedy institution thanks to home video, the re-release arrives with an R rating intact. The ensemble cast includes Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Michael Showalter, Marguerite Moreau, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, and Bradley Cooper in one of his earliest film roles.

Train to Busan (10th Anniversary Re-release)

Platform: Limited Theatrical (Remastered) Rating: R Distributor: Well Go USA

Yeon Sang-ho’s landmark Korean zombie thriller Train to Busan returns to cinemas in a newly remastered version to celebrate its 10th anniversary, also on August 14. Starring Gong Yoo, Jung Yu-mi, and Ma Dong-seok, the film remains one of the most acclaimed horror films of the past decade. The R-rated theatrical experience is being positioned as an event screening ahead of Yeon Sang-ho’s new Korean zombie thriller Colony, which also releases at the end of August.

Point Break (35th Anniversary Re-release)

Platform: Limited Theatrical** Rating: R

Kathryn Bigelow’s iconic 1991 action thriller returns to cinemas for a 35th anniversary engagement on August 16. Starring Keanu Reeves as an FBI agent who goes undercover in the Southern California surfing community to investigate a series of bank robberies, with Patrick Swayze as the charismatic leader of the suspects, Point Break carries its original R rating into its theatrical re-release.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (Re-release)

Platform: Limited Theatrical Rating: R

Tobe Hooper’s 1974 original returns to select theaters on August 18. One of the most influential horror films ever made, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre introduced Leatherface and defined the slasher genre for decades. Its R-rated theatrical re-release continues a summer of anniversary event screenings for classic genre films.

Mutiny

Platform: Wide Theatrical Release Rating: R — Strong/Bloody Violence, Language Runtime: 1h 35m Distributor: Lionsgate

The biggest wide R-rated release of August 21 is Mutiny, Lionsgate’s action thriller starring Jason Statham. After witnessing the murder of his billionaire boss and being framed for the crime, former special forces operative Cole Reed boards a cargo ship on a one-man crusade for vengeance, only to uncover a dangerous international conspiracy.

Directed by Jean-François Richet, who previously worked with Lionsgate on Plane, the film was written by Lindsay Michel and J.P. Davis. The cast includes Annabelle Wallis, Roland Møller, Adrian Lester, and Arnas Fedaravičius. The MPA has rated it R for strong, bloody violence and language, which lines up precisely with the franchise-ready Statham formula that audiences have come to expect.

It Ends

Platform: Limited Theatrical — New York and Los Angeles (Nationwide expansion August 28) Rating: R — Pervasive Language Runtime: 1h 29m Distributor: NEON

It Ends arrives in limited release on August 21 before expanding nationwide on August 28. Written and directed by Alexander Ullom in his feature debut, the existential horror film follows four recent college graduates who go on a late-night drive for food and accidentally turn onto a road that stretches on forever, with untold horrors stalking them from the darkness.

The film premiered at SXSW 2025 to enormous critical acclaim, earning a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes off 24 reviews, and was later acquired by NEON for theatrical distribution. It stars Phinehas Yoon, Akira Jackson, Noah Toth, and Mitchell Cole. The R rating is for pervasive language rather than graphic violence, which is noteworthy — the horror here is largely psychological. Audiences who responded to Backrooms earlier in 2026 are likely to find it a compelling companion piece.

Hot Spot

Platform: Limited Theatrical Rating: R Distributor: TBD

Hot Spot opens in limited release on August 21. Set in a near-future society governed by sentient artificial intelligence, a private detective investigating a murder case uncovers a rebel group capable of bringing down the digital overlord. As the investigation deepens, his identity begins to unravel in a state of hypnotic psychological collapse. The film stars Noomi Rapace and is directed by Agnieszka Smoczynska. It carries an R rating.

The Last Sunrise arrives on Prime Video on August 26. Directed by Carlson Young and adapted by Anna Klassen from Anna Todd’s 2025 novel of the same name, the R-rated romantic drama follows Ry (Maia Reficco), a 22-year-old college student living with a chronic illness, who accompanies her overprotective mother (Eva Longoria) to Mallorca, Spain for the summer.

The Dog Stars

Platform: Wide Theatrical Release (also IMAX and Premium Large Format) Rating: R — Language, Strong Violence Runtime: 1h 40m Distributor: 20th Century Studios

Ridley Scott’s post-apocalyptic epic The Dog Stars is the prestige wide release of August 28. Adapted from Peter Heller’s acclaimed 2012 novel by screenwriter Mark L. Smith (Twisters, The Boys in the Boat), the film stars Jacob Elordi as Hig, a young civilian pilot who, years after a devastating flu pandemic has wiped out most of humanity, has carved out a survivalist existence at an abandoned Colorado airfield with his dog and a hardened military companion named Bangley (Josh Brolin).

When a mysterious radio transmission crackles to life, Hig sets out to find whatever hope may remain. Margaret Qualley, Guy Pearce, Benedict Wong, and Allison Janney round out the cast. Shot partly at Pinewood Studios and on location in the Italian Dolomites and Colorado, The Dog Stars has been rated R for language and strong violence. Scott has reportedly called this one of the best films he has ever made.

The Whisper Man

Platform: Netflix (Streaming) Rating: R — Some Bloody Violence, Disturbing Images, Suicide, Language, Brief Sexual References Runtime: 1h 51m Distributor: Netflix / AGBO

The Whisper Man is the most high-profile streaming release of August 28 and likely one of the most-watched R-rated titles of the entire month on any platform. Produced by Anthony and Joe Russo’s AGBO in partnership with Netflix — their sixth collaboration — the film is adapted from Alex North’s New York Times bestselling novel of the same name.

When his eight-year-old son is abducted, a widowed crime writer named Tom Kennedy (Adam Scott) turns to his estranged father (Robert De Niro), a retired detective who once put away a convicted serial killer known as The Whisper Man, only to discover the new disappearances are chillingly connected to that decades-old case. Michelle Monaghan, Michael Keaton, John Carroll Lynch, Hamish Linklater, Owen Teague, Will Brill, and Acston Luca Porto also star. The film is directed by James Ashcroft and written by Ben Jacoby (The First Omen) and Chase Palmer (It). The MPA rating descriptors — bloody violence, disturbing images, suicide, language, and brief sexual references — are worth noting for parents whose teens may encounter this on Netflix.

From Yeon Sang-ho, the South Korean director of Train to Busan, comes Colony — a new Korean zombie thriller that forms a spiritual complement to the Train to Busan 10th Anniversary re-release also hitting in August. When a rapidly mutating virus is released during a biotech conference, the facility goes into immediate lockdown, trapping Professor Se-jeong (Gianna Jun) inside with a small group of survivors as the infected around them undergo horrific transformations. Fugitive hero Erik Reed must clear his name and reunite with his family while a mysterious villain pursues him. The cast includes Michael Madsen, Ciara Hanna, David Ramsey, and Jason Faunt. The film carries an R rating.

Bitter Christmas
