All Mortal Kombat Films to Stream on HBO Max Ahead of Mortal Kombat II Theatrical Release

Ahead of the highly anticipated theatrical debut of Mortal Kombat II this fall, HBO Max has announced that it will be adding the entire Mortal Kombat film collection to its platform beginning July 1, 2025.

The move comes as fans prepare for the next chapter in the long-running franchise, which began as a groundbreaking arcade fighting game in 1992 and evolved into one of the most iconic and violent action properties in pop culture.

Full Franchise to Be Available

The streaming rollout includes all three live-action Mortal Kombat films:

  • Mortal Kombat (1995)
  • Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997)
  • Mortal Kombat (2021 reboot)

Also arriving on HBO Max are the four animated films from the Mortal Kombat Legends series:

  • Scorpion’s Revenge
  • Battle of the Realms
  • Snow Blind
  • Cage Match

This marks the first time the entire Mortal Kombat film catalog — both live-action and animated — will be available to stream on a single platform.

Franchise Background and Legacy

The original Mortal Kombat game was released by Midway in 1992, gaining notoriety for its stylized violence and “Fatality” finishing moves. The film adaptation in 1995, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, was a surprise commercial success, grossing over $120 million worldwide.

A sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, followed in 1997 but failed to match its predecessor’s success, facing harsh criticism from fans and reviewers alike.

After years in development limbo, the series was rebooted with a new live-action film in 2021. While reviews were mixed, the movie found an audience during the COVID-era box office and performed well enough to greenlight a sequel.

What to Expect from Mortal Kombat II

Mortal Kombat II, directed by Simon McQuoid, is scheduled to release in theaters on October 24, 2025. The sequel brings back much of the original cast, including:

  • Ludi Lin as Liu Kang
  • Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade
  • Chin Han as Shang Tsung

New cast members joining the fight include:

  • Karl Urban as Johnny Cage
  • Adeline Rudolph as Kitana
  • Tati Gabrielle as Jade

The film is expected to expand on the mythology introduced in the 2021 reboot, continuing the battle between the forces of Earthrealm and Outworld.

By offering the entire franchise in one place, HBO Max is positioning itself as the go-to destination for Mortal Kombat fans ahead of the sequel’s release. The July 1 streaming launch gives both longtime followers and newcomers an opportunity to revisit — or discover — the characters and stories that have made Mortal Kombat a global phenomenon.
