Gridman Universe Movie Finally Hits U.S. Theaters—But Only for One Special Night

Anime Fans, Rejoice! Gridman Universe Is Coming to the Big Screen in the U.S.—With a Twist

Fans of the Gridman anime have a reason to celebrate: Gridman Universe is finally getting a U.S. theatrical release! But here’s the catch—it won’t be showing in theaters across the country like most big movies. Instead, the film is part of this year’s Japan Cuts: Festival of New Japanese Film and will be screened on July 20, the final day of the festival.

Gridman Universe continues the story that began in 2018 with SSSS. Gridman, an anime remake of the 1993 series Gridman the Hyper Agent. In the movie, the main character Yūta Hibiki is trying to live a peaceful life after saving the world. But when a giant kaiju monster suddenly attacks his city, Yūta must team up with Gridman once again to fight.

The movie is created by Studio Trigger, the animation studio behind popular hits like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Kill la Kill, and Little Witch Academia. Known for their wild visuals and action-packed scenes, Studio Trigger brings their signature style to Gridman Universe.

Other Japanese films showing at the Japan Cuts festival include Kowloon Generic Romance, Blazing Fists, Kaiju Guy!, Serpent’s Path, and ChaO. With so many exciting titles, it’s a great year for fans of kaiju, tokusatsu, and Japanese cinema in general. Plus, more kaiju fun is on the way with the upcoming anime Kaiju No. 8 and new updates for Godzilla x Kong: Supernova and the upcoming Power Rangers series on Disney+.
