Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has crossed a big milestone at the global box office. After three weeks in theaters, the film has now made over $506 million worldwide.
The movie had a huge budget—reportedly around $400 million—so it still has a long way to go before it makes a profit. Usually, a film needs to earn about double its budget to break even. The top-earning film in the Mission: Impossible series is Fallout, which made $791 million, and The Final Reckoning hopes to beat that number.
The new film, which may be the last in the series, is directed by Christopher McQuarrie and stars Tom Cruise as usual. It has already made more money than several earlier Mission: Impossible movies, including the first one and Mission: Impossible III. It’s expected to soon pass Mission: Impossible 2 and Dead Reckoning as well.
Over the weekend, The Final Reckoning also passed the total earnings of another big movie: Guy Ritchie’s 2009 hit Sherlock Holmes, which made $498 million worldwide. That film starred Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, and was praised for its stylish and action-packed take on the classic detective story.
Although Sherlock Holmes was a success and led to a sequel in 2011, a third movie has been delayed for years. Guy Ritchie has since worked on other potential franchises, like The Man from U.N.C.L.E., King Arthur, and Aladdin, but most didn’t lead to follow-ups. , his film The Gentlemen did get a spin-off show on Netflix, and he is currently working on a Young Sherlock series for Prime Video.
The Final Reckoning got mixed reviews from critics but strong support from audiences. It holds an 80% critic score and an 89% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
While it’s still not the top Mission: Impossible film in terms of box office numbers, it’s climbing fast and proving that this action series still has a lot of life left in it.
