IT: Welcome To Derry Episode 3 Brings a Poetic Flashback Filled With Emotion and Hidden Fear

The third episode of HBO’s horror series “IT: Welcome to Derry delivers one of the most emotional and surprising moments of the season. Instead of focusing only on Pennywise’s terror, Episode 3 explores a touching story of first love, childhood memories, and heartbreak, all tied to the mysterious evil haunting Derry.

This episode focuses on General Francis Shaw (played by James Remar) and Rose (played by Kimberly Guerrero). Fans learn that these two characters share a secret past that began when they were children — a connection that shaped who they became as adults.

The story flashes back to 1908, showing young Shaw and Rose at just 12 years old. After spending the day at a summer fair, Shaw wanders into the dark woods and comes face-to-face with one of Pennywise’s horrifying forms. Rose bravely saves him, and together they run away from the creature. That night becomes the start of a deep bond — one that later grows into young love.

However, their lives take different paths when Shaw’s family moves away from Derry. As time passes, he forgets both Rose and the fear he once experienced. But years later, when he returns to Derry as a high-ranking general, those buried memories slowly return.

In an interview, Kimberly Guerrero said that Rose’s courage and strength come from that childhood experience. “She already knew she had a duty to protect her people,” she explained, “but she never expected love to change her so deeply.” When Shaw left, it left “a huge space in her heart,” and she decided never to fall in love again — choosing instead to dedicate her life to her community and responsibilities.

James Remar added that the flashback is more than a romantic story. “These two crossed boundaries and formed a bond through a shared trauma,” he said. “That moment shaped their entire lives. It’s the heart of our story.”

Viewers have described the episode as “poetic”, and Remar agreed. He said the emotional cracks in the characters’ hearts make the story powerful, not just scary. Guerrero also shared that Welcome to Derry explores the gray areas between good and evil, showing that people are complex, layered, and human — even in a world filled with monsters.

Both actors shared their excitement about joining the Stephen King universe. Remar was thrilled to hear the name Dick Halloran (from The Shining), proving all of King’s stories connect in small ways. Guerrero remembered seeing a bus marked “Shawshank” while filming in Port Hope, Canada — a nod to The Shawshank Redemption. “That was my real ‘Welcome to Derry’ moment,” she said.

While Episode 3 focuses on emotion and memory, it doesn’t forget its roots in horror. The show still contains scary scenes, disturbing imagery, and flashbacks filled with fear — all connected to Pennywise’s presence. These dark moments make the episode more intense and mature in tone.

Because of its content, “IT: Welcome to Derry” Episode 3 is best suited for viewers aged 16 and above. It includes psychological horror, emotional trauma, and frightening visuals, but no sexual content. The episode’s mix of love, fear, and loss makes it ideal for mature teens and adults who enjoy emotional horror stories.
